Why Cleaning Hearing Aids Matters for Clear Hearing

• Prevents Wax and Debris Buildup Earwax (cerumen), skin flakes, moisture, dust, and oils from your skin naturally accumulate on hearing aids. This buildup can block the microphone or receiver (speaker), muffling or distorting sounds. → Result: You hear less clearly, even if the hearing aid is working perfectly otherwise.

• Maintains Sound Quality A dirty hearing aid acts like a clogged filter. High-pitched sounds (like voices, birds, or doorbells) get weakened or lost. Cleaning keeps the sound pathway open so speech remains crisp and natural.

• Prevents Feedback (Whistling) Wax or debris can cause improper sealing or air leaks, leading to annoying whistling or squealing. Regular cleaning reduces feedback and improves comfort.

• Avoids Damage and Expensive Repairs Moisture and debris can corrode the tiny electronics inside. Clean, dry hearing aids last longer and need fewer repairs.

  Steps you should be taking to keep your hearing aids clean

• Daily: Wipe the hearing aid with a soft, dry cloth. Gently brush microphones and receivers with a wax brush or tool provided by your hearing care professional.

• Weekly: Remove the dome and roll it in an alcohol prep pad to dissolve any wax that the dry cloth hasn’t been able to remove. Make sure it is completely dry before putting it back onto the receiver. While the dome is off, this is a good time to brush out your wax guard which sits on the end of the receiver.

• Monthly / Bimonthly: Replace the wax guard as often as needed or at least every one to two months.

• Never use sharp objects or immerse the aids in water.
