Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids?

Medicare parts A, B, and D do NOT cover hearing aids. However, If you elect to convert your Medicare coverage to a managed "Medicare Advantage" plan (also referred to as Part C), the answer is Yes. Medicare Advantages plans do cover hearing aids.

Does Medicare pay for hearing aids?

Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) do pay for hearing aids. But, of course, the amount they pay varies widely from plan to plan, so it's essential to know the details of each one before choosing.

As a side note, if you are a retired Federal employee, you most likely have a hearing aid benefit through a Federal program. So feel free to skip to the Federal benefits section.

No one else, not your insurance agent, not your insurance company, and none of the third parties they use will tell you exactly which hearing aids they offer or what your actual out-of-pocket costs will be. Lucky for you, we have spent hours upon hours waiting on hold, filling out forms, and reading through insurance contracts (talk about watching paint dry), so you don't have to.

We've discovered that although we have a few favorites, all the plans are good this year and well worth using. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, no matter which one, make sure to use the hearing aid benefit that your insurance provides. In most cases, this will give you higher-rated hearing aids for less than buying through any other channel.

Additionally, make sure to use an in-network provider BEFORE you purchase anything. These plans will not reimburse you after the fact. Did we mention that Pure Hearing is in-network with every Medicare Advantage plan in Utah?!

Which plan is best will depend on your hearing loss and goals. For example, if you have a mild loss and a small budget, you'll want a different plan than someone with a severe loss looking for state-of-the-art instruments. So, we'll start by giving you the winners in each category: A. The best overall, B. The best zero-cost option, C. The lowest cost high-end option. We'll then summarize the hearing aid benefit for each plan, how and where to use it, and explain all your options.
