Pure Hearing BBB Business Review

We've summarized every 2024 Medicare Advantage hearing aid insurance benefit offered in the United States. So you can click, read, and know before you go! We also provide a downloadable EOB for all the plans so you can get it straight from the horse's mouth (hopefully, it's the only thing you're getting out of a horse's mouth).

Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids?

Medicare parts A, B, and D do NOT cover hearing aids. However, If you elect to convert your Medicare coverage to a managed "Medicare Advantage" plan (also referred to as Part C), the answer is Yes. Medicare Advantages plans do cover hearing aids.

Does Medicare pay for hearing aids?

Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) do pay for hearing aids. But, of course, the amount they pay varies widely from plan to plan, so it's essential to know the details of each one before choosing.

As a side note, if you are a retired Federal employee, you most likely have a hearing aid benefit through a Federal program. So feel free to skip to the Federal benefits section.

No one else, not your insurance agent, not your insurance company, and none of the third parties they use will tell you exactly which hearing aids they offer or what your actual out-of-pocket costs will be. Lucky for you, we have spent hours upon hours waiting on hold, filling out forms, and reading through insurance contracts (talk about watching paint dry), so you don't have to.

We've discovered that although we have a few favorites, all the plans are good this year and well worth using. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, no matter which one, make sure to use the hearing aid benefit that your insurance provides. In most cases, this will give you higher-rated hearing aids for less than buying through any other channel.

Additionally, make sure to use an in-network provider BEFORE you purchase anything. These plans will not reimburse you after the fact. Did we mention that Pure Hearing is in-network with every Medicare Advantage plan in Utah?!

Which plan is best will depend on your hearing loss and goals. For example, if you have a mild loss and a small budget, you'll want a different plan than someone with a severe loss looking for state-of-the-art instruments. So, we'll start by giving you the winners in each category: A. The best overall, B. The best zero-cost option, C. The lowest cost high-end option. We'll then summarize the hearing aid benefit for each plan, how and where to use it, and explain all your options.

  • They offer four standard PPO/HMO plans and one SNP plan, and just like UnitedHealth, they made it simple. All four standard plans provide the same hearing aid benefit, and their SNP plan is a bit richer. They partnered with a third-party administrator named Nations Hearing, which worked well in 2022. However, Nations Hearing raised their prices significantly for 2023, making Aetna's hearing aid prices the most expensive this year.

The hearing aid benefit for Aetna's four standard plans:

    Insurance Pays: $1,250/ear.

  • Cigna has two Medicare Advantage plans this year, an HMO and a PPO, and both plans provide the same hearing aid benefit. One unique thing about their benefit is that it is not a per/ear benefit; you can apply the total amount toward one ear if you like. They pay a total of $2,000, so you can get an excellent hearing aid for free if you need just one hearing aid. They have contracted with Hearing Care Solutions to administer their program, so you have to use their pricing and a provider in the HCS network (Pure Hearing is in the network, by the way). We have noticed that Hearing Care Solutions takes its time processing orders, so be prepared to wait for your hearing aids after we have placed the order.

The hearing aid benefit for Cigna:

    Insurance Pays: $2,000 total.

    How often: Every 3 years.

    You pay: Anything over $2,000.

Where: Any Hearing Care Solutions provider. You must use their pricing structure. (Pure Hearing)

  • DMBA, like Regence and Humana, has partnered with TruHearing to provide exceptional value! In fact, DMBA would have won our lowest-priced, high-end category if they were open to the general public. But, since they aren't, we didn't think it was fair to compare them to the true Medicare Advantage plans that anyone could choose. The only way to have DMBA Medicare Supplement is to decide to get it when you retire. If you have DMBA, it is the least expensive way to get a top-of-the-line Signia hearing aid. The downside to this plan is the same as Regence and Humana; you can only choose one hearing aid brand.

The hearing aid benefit for DMBA is:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

    How often: Every year.

You pay: $399/ear Advanced and $699/ear Premium.

Where: A Truhearing provider. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

    $399/ear (B-Advanced/1-Current)
    Signia Pure AX5 (non-rechargeable version)

    $699/ear (A-Premium/1-Current)
    Signia Pure AX7 (non-rechargeable version)

Option to upgrade to rechargeable for $50/ear

  • Humana is our choice for the least expensive high-end option and is an excellent pick if you like Signia hearing aids. They offer three standard PPO/HMO plans and one SNP plan. All the plans provide the same two hearing aid choices, each with a different copay. We love that you can get a premium hearing aid for such a small copay, but we find the lack of hearing aid choices a little restrictive. In the end, though, Signia is an excellent hearing aid, and this plan offers great value!

The hearing aid benefit for Human plans are:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

How often: Every year. (SNP plan pays every 3 years)

    You pay:
    - Gold Plus (HMO) -$499/ear Advanced, $799/ear Premium
    - Choice (PPO) - $599/ear Advanced, $899/ear Premium
    - Honor (PPO) - $699/ear Advanced, $999/ear Premium
    - Choice (SNP) - $0/ear Advanced

Where: A Truhearing provider. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

    B-Advanced/1-Current
    Signia Pure AX5 (non-rechargeable version)

    A-Premium/1-Current
    Signia Pure AX7 (non-rechargeable version)
Option to upgrade to rechargeable for $50/ear

  • Molina won our best zero-cost option for 2023. Molina has one HMO and two SNP plans for 2023, but all three plans offer the same hearing aid benefit. They are one of two insurance companies that provide a free hearing aid option outside the SNP plans (Aetna is the other one). Their explanation of benefits states that they pay "Everything" every year, but that is all it says. A more precise statement would be that they pay "Everything" for a set of economy hearing aids and $695/ear for any other models. If you're looking for a plan that offers a free hearing aid option and decent value on other models, Molina is a good plan.

The hearing aid benefit for Molina:

Insurance Pays: Everything (for a set of economy aids) and $695/ear for other models.

    How often: Every year.

You pay: $0 (for a set of economy aids) and anything over $695/ear for other models.

Where: Any HearUSA provider, and you must use their pricing structure. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

  • Regence is a well-known name in healthcare, and they have put together a straightforward yet effective hearing aid benefit program for 2023. All four of their plans offer the same hearing aid benefit with a couple of different copays. In addition, it provides excellent low-cost, high-end Signia hearing aids and nothing else. So if you love Signia hearing aids (and we do), this is a perfect choice. However, if you prefer Phonak, ReSound, Unitron, or any other brand, you'll want to choose a plan with a broader selection.

The hearing aid benefit for Regence BCBS plans are:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

    How often: Every year.

    You pay:
    - Valiance (PPO) - $599/ear Advanced, $899/ear Premium
    - RX Enhanced (PPO) - $599/ear Advanced, $899/ear Premium
    - RX Primary (PPO) - $699/ear Advanced, $999/ear Premium
    - RX Classic (PPO) - $699/ear Advanced, $999/ear Premium

Where: A Truhearing provider. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

    B-Advanced/1-Current
    Signia Pure AX5 (non-rechargeable version)

    A-Premium/1-Current
    Signia Pure AX7 (non-rechargeable version)

Option to upgrade to rechargeable for $50/ear

  • They offer five different Medicare Advantage plans, but all the standard HMO plans have the same benefit, so there are only three hearing aid plans.

Their PPO plan uses the TruHearing network and offers Advanced and Premium Signia hearing aids at highly affordable prices. You can use this benefit with any TruHearing provider like Pure Hearing.

The hearing aid benefit for their PPO Plan:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

    How often: Every year.

    You pay a copay: Advanced-$499/ear, Premium-$799/ear

Where: Any TruHearing provider. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

    B-Advanced (1-Current)
    Signia Pure AX5 - $499/ear

    A-Premium (1-Current)
    Signia Pure AX7 - $799/ear

Their standard HMO plans have a five-tier hearing aid copay option ranging from $399/ear to $1,699/ear. Usually, you would need to go to an IHC facility to use this benefit; however, Pure Hearing matches the program dollar for dollar. In other words, you CAN use your Select Health HMO hearing aid benefit at Pure Hearing.

Lastly, your card will say HMO SNP somewhere if you have a special needs plan (you have Medicaid and Medicare). This plan will provide you with basic (tier one) hearing aids. You must go to an IHC facility to use this benefit.

The hearing aid benefit for their HMO Plans:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

    How often: Every year.

    You pay a copay: $399, $589, $849, $1,199, or $1,699 per ear.

    Where: IHC and Pure Hearing.

    Hearing Aid Options:

    ReSound Custom 9 - $1,699/ear
    Signia Pure AX7 - $1,699/ear

  • For 2023 our best overall is the United Healthcare/AARP Medicare Advantage plan. We chose this as our favorite for three reasons: 1. It has an excellent low-cost option, 2. It offers a comprehensive selection, and 3. It provides some of the best value whether you are shopping for the lowest cost or the highest-end hearing aid models.

They offer six standard and two SNP plans, which could confuse things, but they made it pretty simple. Their six standard PPO and HMO plans have the same benefit, and the two SNP plans share a unique benefit explicitly tailored for the SNP plans. So if your insurance card says SNP on it, you have an SNP plan; if it doesn't, you have a standard one. SNP stands for special needs plan and is only offered to individuals who qualify for Medicaid and Medicare. So, let's break down the two hearing aid benefits they offer.

The hearing aid benefit for Unitedhealth's six standard plans:

Insurance Pays: Anything over the copay.

    How often: Every year.

    You pay a copay per ear of: $175, $425, $800, or $1,225.

Where: Any provider in the UnitedHearing Network. (Pure Hearing)

    Hearing Aid Options:

    - Relate Gold - $425/ear (B-Advanced/1-Current)

    Name Brand

    $800/ear (C-Standard/1-Current)

    Signia Pure AX3
    Phonak Audeo L50
